- Determine and review the profile of the company owners and their antecedents. Any known National security reports / breaches against them?
- Review the profile and list of their existing clientele and ascertain frequency / record of cases / claims against them in Court.
- Verify the legality and currency of their courier license renewal.
- Establish that they have functional websites and e-mail addresses and that their operational bases are verifiable.
- Confirm they belong to and actively participate in the Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, as well as the Association of Courier Operators of Nigeria (ANCO). These could become possible Arbiters in any event of a dispute in future.
- Verify the credibility of the company’s management and staff with a view to ensuring that there will be no lapses / crisis of integrity that can impact your business in future.
- Seek a direct confirmation from at least one of the customers to enable you substantiate the quality of their services independently.
- Check how flexible and responsive they are in terms of pricing and the possible impact of that on your budget.
- Evaluate the depth and scope of the company’s vision and mission statements vis-à-vis the potentials they have for growth.
- Give trial mails to be able to establish the quality of services received and the degree of the management’s involvement in ensuring prompt resolution of your complaints / concerns.
- Verify their spread of offices across the Country. It is very dangerous and risky to entrust your mails to companies that have less than at least ten (10) offices in various parts of the country. They are just middlemen between you and the real courier operators. Why not eliminate them!
- Pay an unscheduled visit to some of their offices to physically assess their existence and the seriousness of their activities. Beware of those who operate a portfolio or briefcase office along the road and around prospecting clients’ offices. When the sheaves are down, where will you locate them?
- Verify that they are actually responsible citizens and have been paying their taxes promptly.
- Seek to review their operational manual or blue print to ensure that they are organised and have defined processes for their work.
- Seek to obtain reference from their Bankers and also ascertain any unethical practices that may have involved them.
- Assess their Global Tracking System and their e-business or IT compliance in the short, medium and longer time frames.
- What form of insurance policy do they have and what is the value insured? For your information, Goods-in-Transit (GIT) insurance policy does not cover bank financial documents legally and dealing with any courier company that has that alone leaves your company grossly exposed!
